Review by Jason Lees for MoreHorror.com
It’s very hard to say what LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is without ruining it, and I don’t mean giving away the ending or any surprises. "LET THE RIGHT ONE IN" doesn’t have any shock twists or jump out grabbers. It’s not that kind of movie. This is a film that deserves to be experienced rather than just talked over. Talking it up, I think, robs you of that initial viewing. It’s best to let the story play out before you. Instead of telling you what it is, I’ll tell you what it isn’t.
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is not a vampire romance, although there’s more love on display here than in any other vampire flick in cinema history. It’s not a gore flick, although we do see more of the red stuff here than in most war movies. It’s not flashy, and it’s not all that fast moving. And, most importantly, it’s not in any way forgettable.
It’s not BLADE, it’s not TWILIGHT, it’s not even BRAM STOKER. What it is is entirely its own beast.
Without stealing its potential potency, let me say that if you give it a chance, what will happen is that you’ll meet Oskar and Eli, two less than normal kids trying to get by without causing too much trouble for those around them. Both of them are kind of a handful. Let’s just say one has special needs, and that’s about how it’s handled. Very delicately.
Some films I brag up and scream at the top of my lungs for everyone to go see. The louder the better, the bloodier the more fun. I usually don’t even care if the crowd I’m screaming at is into chunkblowers. I love to recommend CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST to church groups just in the hopes that they’ll play it at their next bake sale, but this is different. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN deserves to find an audience. The right audience.
If you want to experience something different, something special, and you’re a little patient, then this little Swedish tale might just be the right one for you. Just remember, I didn’t force you to it.
I just invited you in.
