Mother's Day (Remake) Review

Mother's Day RemakeBy Marcey Papandrea,

Darren Lynn Bousman is one of the few names of modern horror that actually really excites me. If I see his name attached to something, I am automatically interested. The man brought us two pretty darn good Saw sequels (II and III) and a very unique and highly entertaining musical rock opera with Repo! I mean really, what’s not to like? The man is out there giving us fresh films for the genre, I admire that a lot and his adventure into the remake territory was an interesting move and one that worked!

Mother’s Day in my humble opinion of course is his best film, and one of the better horror remakes I’ve seen more recently. Mother’s Day is a remake of the classic Troma film, and trust me when I say it doesn’t take a lot to improve on trash. Not to diss Troma or anything because I adore Troma, they are entertaining and the biggest of guilty pleasures.

Bousman took a film that was incredibly silly, and remade it into an intense and horror filled ride. He didn’t ignore what came before it, he respected the original film, and put in his own take and updates with screenwriter Scott Milam. This film could have easily gone many different ways, a straight remake and still be extremely silly or play it straight and have it not work. The film is very self aware of what it is, and for me this worked extremely well. This isn’t a film for the faint at heart, this is as brutal as they come, it doesn’t take itself completely seriously as it knows it gets over the top, and I gotta say I loved it!

I am pretty sure Mother’s Day is going to be a love it or hate it affair, I am sure some Troma loyal fans hate the idea of remakes and seeing that this is a different breed it might not be for their tastes. Which is perfectly fine, I wasn’t really on-board with a remake either until Bousman came on and it started to sound pretty intriguing. As I mentioned this is a very brutal film, and again that might not suit every taste, my taste however, I can handle anything and if the film itself is good and entertaining and all the rest the brutality is fine.

Now to be honest the original film had a very thin plot, and this one actually plays along with that and its plot is thin but it really feels like there is a lot of meat on the bones. Basically a crazy family, lead by matriarch Natalie Koffin ’Mother’ (Rebecca DeMornay) return to their previous home and terrorise the current owners and their friends. Think along the lines of something like The Last House On The Left, except Krug is a woman.

Now what makes this film so great and just so damned entertaining is Rebecca DeMornay, this lovely lady gives a hell of a performance and just a reminder of what a talented cookie she is. Without her in the role, I highly doubt the film would have worked as well as it did. She is actually the one you’ll remember and the one that stays with you. Not to take away from the rest of the cast, but she’s the best written character and the best performer of the bunch.

The family aside from the mother are alright, doing the typical crazy thing, it was fine and it works better once she shows up. The victims, well they are pretty typical actually, making incredibly stupid decisions and you actually find yourself rooting against them at times, which can sometimes be seen as a fault but it actually shows the power of the mother character that you want to kind of be on her side even thought you shouldn’t be. Unfortunately no one else really sticks out, I’d say that Jamie King probably sticks out the most and she gives a solid performance. I also didn’t mind Shawn Ashmore, but I do have a soft spot for the Ashmore’s.

"Mother's Day" is nicely directed by Bousman, and it has a really solid script. This in my eyes is a step in the right direction for horror remakes, I thought for the most part it hit the notes in the right spot and avoided the remake traps that so many fall for. I enjoyed the film, and it gets a high recommendation from me, however if this doesn’t sound like it is for you, it probably isn’t.
