Night of The Demons (Remake): Movie Review

Night of The Demons Remake Movie Review
Review by Mike Pickle

This film has been out for about a year, but I resisted watching it until now. Despite the fact that most remakes are bad, convoluted knock-offs; I was still kind of excited to see that a Night of the Demons remake was released. If any film is ripe for a remake it's the best of the best of B-movie Horror I loved back in 1988. How hard could it be to remake a gloriously bad movie with updated special effects? Very hard, apparently.

When first deciding whether to watch it; all the evidence pointed to this remake being another bad one. Straight to video with virtually no promotion. The flashy, but generic cover art. Edward Furlong in a lead role (Seems like half of the really bad Horror films I've seen in the last few years have starred Edward Furlong). Shannon Elizabeth starring as Angela is another clue. Not to say that she's bad. She's a decent actress and she's pretty, but she sadly has not had a great part in 10 years. This one is no different. After seeing this cheese-fest it's clear that hiring Mr. Furlong and Ms. Elizabeth was just a cheap attempt at getting a "name" to star.

I expected some major cheese because that was the best part of the original, but this one fell short in almost every way. It wasn't a total loss thanks to Monica Keena from Freddy vs. Jason and some of the demon effects and fun kills, but it certainly was not a winner.

The film opens in 1925 New Orleans at the Broussard Mansion where the original owner invites friends over for a Halloween Party. All her guests end up dead and she hangs herself off the balcony in a segment put together like a mock silent film for no apparent reason and is revisited in lame flashbacks throughout the film. An indication of what type of film lies ahead.

85 years later, Angela (Shannon Elizabeth) rents out the mansion to throw a dull party that tries way too hard to be cool and edgy. Uninvited drug dealer Colin (Edward Furlong) shows up to shop his wares and vapid and unlikeable party girls Lily (Diora Baird) and Suzanne (Bobbi Sue Luther) show up with their considerably less slutty friend Maddie (Monica Keena). Cheesy looking jock pretty boy Dex (Michael Copon) and his annoying, wise-cracking friend Jason (John F. Beach) round out the young cast of misfits who are trapped on the mansion's grounds after a police raid kills the party.

They snoop around the mansion and find a bunch of skeletons in a hidden room in the basement. Angela gets a little too close and one of them bites her hand. Soon she becomes a demon and, finally, the film becomes watchable. Angela gives Dax a nice little demon slug by kissing him in a game of Spin the Bottle. In turn, he uses anal sex to infect Lily (one of the more enjoyable scenes). Soon everyone but Colin, Maddie and Jason are demons. Not only do they have to fight off the onslaught of demons until morning, but the fate of the entire world depends on their survival. A thought that is way scarier than the film itself.

There were some delightful little kill scenes that made it somewhat enjoyable, but they were too few and far between. By the time you sit through all the filler; the mostly well done special effects and gore don't have as much effect as they should. There were a few nods to the original that fell flat as well. Especially the lipstick through the boob scene. They tried to take it a step further, but it just felt forced. The original Suzanne, Linnea Quigley, makes a brief appearance 20 years older in the same pink outfit and bends over in front of 10 year old trick-or-treaters. Now that is scary. The humor rarely hits the mark and I lost interest in several of the rambling dialogue scenes while waiting for the action and gore.

The only humorous scenes were the ones that were supposed to be scary. It's a decent time if you don't mind sitting through all the bad set up and there are plenty of things to satisfy only the most primal of Horror urges. Things like demon boob snakes, demon possession by way of anal sex, and most of the girls kissing each other at one time or another; including a scene where all the demons take time out from their mission to take over the world to have an orgy. Edward Furlong was actually pretty good and showed that he still has the chops if he had a decent script to work with. This remake has a marginal amount of dumb fun, but for me; the bad out-weighed the good.
