Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D is the latest episode in the long running franchise. The world is still in the grip of the zombie plague caused by The Umbrella Corporation, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is still on a quest to end the plague and destroy the evil Corporation. Her quest leads her to a safe haven in free from the threat of zombies, but when she gets there she finds it over run with them. Lucky as the film would be even shorter than it is.

I would like it to be known that I was a fan of the franchise, yes they were dumb action horror movies, a typical popcorn movie, where you slip your brain into neutral and coast along with the action. Minimal plot progression, but they were good fun with great action sequences.

Afterlife however, throws what little redeeming features the previous films had away, and leaves a film that is totally style over substance. In fact the container the popcorn came in had more substance than the movie itself. You know when you have one of those days where you look back and wonder “what the hell did I do today?” Well this movie is like one of those days.

As the end credits rolled, after a thankfully short hour and a half, I actually couldn’t remember one thing about what had just happened. Yes there were great visuals, with some excellent use of 3D, but that was it. I didn’t go in expecting a thought provoking film, but please at the very least give a film that keeps the spark of activity alive in my brain.

I suppose it is to be expected that a film based on a video game should fall into the same traps as its source, repetitive action sequences and far too much reliance on slow motion. This reviewer was kind of getting bored of slow motion by the end of The Matrix trilogy all these years later it’s become a bit dull.

The 3D sequences were great, and did invoke the occasional “hell yeah” from me, but if this is an example of what adding 3D to a film is going to result in then please film makers stop right now.
