Here at MoreHorror, we sometimes like to give you more than one perspective about certain movies that catch our fancy. So, without further ado, here's another review of the much talked about gross out horror flick The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence.
by Jason Lees, MoreHorror.com
Remember a few years ago when we all heard about this film called “The Human Centipede” and how it was supposed to be the sickest film of all time? Remember how the rumors were that it outgrossed and outshocked even Faces of Death and Cannibal Holocaust? Do you remember how it was supposed to show you the worst in people and would separate the world of sickos from everyone else?
And do you remember when you finally saw it and thought it was kinda tame? That it almost played like a comedy more than a serious horror film? Yea, me, too.
Now do you remember hearing about the sequel and how director Tom Six was going to outdo himself by just adding 9 more people to the chain? Do you remember asking yourself why? Again, I do, and after finally watching Human Centipede II, I think I’ve finally figured it out. Six didn’t just set out to make another installment in his own personal wacko series, he actually set out to make the film EVERYONE thought he was making in the first place.
The original HUMAN CENTIPEDE plays like a neo-modern take on the mad scientist subgenre. Instead of shocking the audience with talk about being God like James Whales’s Frankenstein did back in the 30’s, Six has his character eating poo (the next obvious step, methinks) right from their synthetically conjoined twin’s anus. Everyone here knows the plot and the story behind the flick. Word of mouth did wonders for the film making it an almost worldwide phenom. Even my mother, who still thinks The Simpsons should be taken off the air for being too obscene, knows what a Human Centipede.
So it’s not a question of learning what the sequel is about that will get you to rent Part II, but deciding whether or not you want to subject yourself to it. Whereas the first film followed the mad doctor, this one takes the meta approach and leaves the ‘fictional’ world of Dr. Heiter and shows us a world in which you can walk into any Best Buy and buy the first film. In this world, Martin is an uber-fan of the flick and has taken its story to heart. Think of Wes Craven’s NEW NIGHTMARE, only without any of the fun.
What we get now is a no holds barred trip into a truly gross and deplorable warehouse. What we don’t get, however, is anything resembling logic or character. And I don’t think we’re supposed to. We got that in the first film. It’s like Six took so much undeserved flack for the first film that he decided he’d earned the right to be as gross and silly as he wants.
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE II is not the worst film ever made. It’s also not the best. What it is, is a unique and (hopefully) one of a kind example of a filmmaker taking a second swing at his work and seeing if he can wring something new from it. Too many follow-ups are just carbon copies of the originals without adding anything to the mix. Love it or hate it (or be sickened by it) at least Tom Six didn’t squat down and deliver more of the same steaming crap to his audience. It is something different and new.
That may not be enough to satisfy everyone, but again, that’s not the point.
Like the first one, this is a far better made film than you’d think walking in, and no matter what you think of the finished product, you can tell that a lot of thought and artistry went into its production. Now, if only Six would take his momentum and show us what he can do in another arena. I, for one, would love to see what this man could do without all the hype and hoopla that his subject matter brings. Would it be gold, or just a bunch of brown? We might have to wait and sit through another Centipede to find out, but I’ll be there.
I’m a sucker for punishment.
