Who would have thought a movie with such a simple plot could honestly be one of the worst horror films made? Well look no further folks, this one bring all new meaning to horrible.
I found this Prism clamshell at a thrift store for 50 cents. From what I studied up, this movie was made in 1972 but could not find a VHS distributor. I guess Prism was the sucker for distributing this mess. The sad part is, the Prism logo (which is truly nostalgic) is the best part of this movie. If you wish to know how bad this is, it has a 1.8 on IMDB.
It takes a lot of hate to get that low rated on there. Also currently as of April 2011, it’s the 26th worst movie on Internet Movie Database. Also what makes this sad is a co-writer is Bill Finger who wrote for DC Comics. What happened here?
The plot of this movie is fairly simple. Paul, a mineral scientist, gets smitten with a girl naked Kathy. Paul is hit on the head by a meteorite during a meteor storm and a small fragment gets lodged in his head. Soon after, strange killings start to happen. That’s the plot. Can't be too hard to execute can it? It can. This leads me to the first huge error in this movie. You can hardly see anything in it. It is riddled with bad lighting that you can barely see what is going on. Even when it is daylight, the movie is very hazy. The audio is also not very good either. At times it seems like they are talking through a funnel.
Let’s get back to the story. Come to find out, Paul (who would have thought such a thing?) is the reptilian moon beast. Professor Salina finds ancient Indian paintings of similar events. This leads me to yet another problem. The moon beast looks really (and I do mean really) fake. The Prism VHS version of the moon beast looks superior to what the movie actually presents to us. But at least the Moon Beast has some good stuff. He kills everybody, which is a good thing. You can barely see the gore due to lighting but at least I can tell something is going on. The Moon Beast looks like a scaled down Godzilla. I guess when you have a very low budget, this is good enough.
Toward the end, Paul finds out he is the Moon Beast all along. He wants to commit suicide but his girlfriend Kathy, Professor, and the police say otherwise. Eventually, an arrow made from the material of the Moon Beast is aimed at him. He explodes (seriously this explosion takes forever with horrible camera affects). The end. I don't see how Bill Finger conceived of this. I don't know whether to blame the writers or the director himself..
Check this out if you need a sleep aid because you will have a hard time through this tedious bore. If you want to see something about how to do a better moon beast, check out the old Scooby episode involving one. That 22 episode is better than the 81 movies of this movie. Somehow, this movie got a DVD release in 2002 under a “Classic Creature Movies” 3 pack of “great movies.” In 2008, it got another DVD release for some strange reason. This is one of the worst horror movies I own. It’s rare so if you want a rare Prism clamshell for nostalgia, this is the movie for you. The movie itself is a total bust. 0 out of 5 stars hands down.
