Mirrors 2 (2010) Review

Mirrors 2by Jesse Miller, MoreHorror.com

Let’s face it; despite featuring Keifer Sutherand, Director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes remake) and some brutal, creative death sequences, the 2008 remake was an overblown mess of a horror film. Even Sutherland hilariously pulling a gun on a nun couldn’t raise it above mediocrity.

So a sequel (Mirrors 2), minus the talents of Sutherland, Aja, and with a story completely unrelated to the first film, was looking to be quite the grim affair. Naturally, I just had to watch it.

It’s been one year since Max Matheson (Nick Stahl) was involved in a car accident that saw the death of his fiancée Kayla, and he is still coming to terms with his overwhelming grief. He soon receives a phone call from his father Jack (William Katt) who offers him a job as a security guard at the Mayflower Department store (the unfortunate chain store featured in the first film). Max accepts the position and begins work that following day, but little does he know he’s about to get wrapped up in a twisted supernatural murder mystery that threatens the very fabric of our universe. Okay, so maybe I made that to sound more dramatic than it actually is but you get the idea.

This isn’t the first time director Victor Garcia has tackled a sequel, he did so with the woeful Return to House on Haunted Hill. As with that forgettable sequel, he crafts this effort with thrills so hackneyed you can’t believe he went for them. You know the one – The heroine is standing in front of a mirror staring at themselves only to look down to wash their hands or what have you. When they look back up in the mirror – there’s some ghostly apparition/random friend standing behind them.

Mirrors 2 features these clichéd and cringe worthy scares featured in nearly every other horror film ever made. This is unfortunate because there is great potential here to create something truly unsettling and psychological and instead, it falls back on old chills and thrills. Also, for some bizarre reason, he must’ve felt the need to show a POV shot from the other side of the mirror. I feel these shots – coloured in lime green - are completely pointless and serve absolutely no purpose to the film. The POV shot can work wonders in a horror film (see: Halloween) but here it’s just silly. But the death scenes are quite effective and slightly creative, so I’ll give them that.

The story, written by a Matt Venne and Sung-ho Kim, is bland, uninspired and quite excruciatingly painful to behold. It goes from kill scene to kill scene without so much as establishing any sort of emotional connection to anyone, whatsoever – and that is unforgivable. I found some dialogue to be unnatural – as most scenes – supernatural mirrors aside – feel, and the manner in which characters act are strange. That Max Matheson all-too-quickly accepts these horrific images, even after sessions with his long-time therapist, is a little disappointing. The story could’ve utilized this psychological aspect a bit better than what turned out. It’s painful to see such potential in this story and then watch it all go to waste as the story unfolds.

Nick Stahl turns in a stilted performance here as Max, which in itself could be effective because for all I know this is him playing a grief-ridden tormented man, but I remained unconnected. Even in what little scenes there are of Max and his fiancée, the dialogue in these scenes were terrible and the delivery of these lines from either actor was pretty poor. Emmanuelle Vaugier provides some solid support as Elizabeth, who also gets tangled up along with Max in the mystery but she is underused and underwritten. Christy Romano provides some brief eye candy in her role as Jenna (as well as providing the obligatory, gratuitous nudie shot).

Mirrors 2 is one horror sequel that is drab and by-the-numbers. Gorehounds will enjoy the brutal and bloody death sequences but other than that, everything else on offer here is quite unimaginative and dull.
