'SNOW WHITE: A DEADLY SUMMER' Review

Snow White Eric RobertsBy Colleen Wanglund, MoreHorror.com

There seems to be quite a few movies cashing in on the popularity of fairy tales lately—especially the Grimm’s brothers scary stories. SNOW WHITE: A DEADLY SUMMER unfortunately uses a familiar name but not much else.

Snow (Shanley Caswell) is a troubled teen who hates her father Grant’s (Eric Roberts) new wife, Eve (Maureen McCormick—yes, Marsha Brady as an evil step-mom). Eve talks Grant into sending Snow to a rehabilitation camp for at-risk teenagers, after her mirror reflection tells Eve that she will never come first in Grant’s life. Can you say cliché? Snow arrives and is greeted by seven other delinquents—yes seven, like the dwarves. Soon the teens are being killed off, one at a time by a mysterious hooded figure.

For background, one delinquent tells the others that a girl was murdered at the camp some thirty years ago and the crime was never solved. OOOOH, spooky. And for some reason we are never clued into, Snow can psychically “see” the murders that occur.

Directed by David DeCoteau (CREEPOZOIDS {1987}, THE FRIGHTENING {2002}), this direct-to-video gem is plodding and very boring. The script by Barbara Kymlicka is nothing more than a gimmicky teen slasher flick, and I’m being generous. The story is so thin it’s translucent. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Snow White and it seems as though the flimsiest of threads to the original fairy tale were thrown in for the hell of it.

Lovely Molly Blu-rayBy MoreHorror.com

From the co-director of The Blair Witch Project, LOVELY MOLLY will be releasing on VOD July 16th followed by Blu-ray ™, DVD and Digital Video August 28th.

From the Official Release:
Some things never leave home. Image Entertainment presents the chilling and disturbing Lovely Molly, which opened to critical acclaim when it was unveiled at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011, making its VOD premiere July 16th, with the Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital Download arriving on August 28th. Fresh from its critically acclaimed national theatrical engagements, Lovely Molly is from the Executive Producer of the Lord of the Rings and marks the long overdue return to first-person horror from the co-director of the revolutionary horror film The Blair Witch Project.

When newlywed Molly Reynolds (Gretchen Lodge) moves back into her long-abandoned childhood home, she begins to experience unnerving and impossible things. What starts as a simple story about things that go bump in the night escalates into a battle for dominion over Molly's spirit, as she is beset by a cunning, malevolent force bent on wreaking havoc and terror on Molly and her family. Richly exploring the parallels between psychosis, addiction, and demonic possession to chilling effect, Lovely Molly shows us what really happens before the exorcist arrives.

'Anguish' (1987) Review

AnguishBy Chris Wright, MoreHorror.com

“Anguish” (1987)
Directed By: Bigas Luna
Written By: Bigas Luna

Starring: Zelda Rubinstein (Alice the Mother), Michael Lerner (John), Talia Paul (Patty), Angel Jove (The Killer), Clara pastor (Linda), Isabel Garcia Lorca (Caroline).

Just when I thought Zelda Rubinstein in the “Poltergeist” trilogy couldn’t get any creepier, she out did herself in Bigas Luna’s psychological Spanish horror film “Anguish.” This horror film blew me away with its imagery. I’ve never seen a movie within a movie done this well before. It’s very sad as I haven’t heard many discuss this movie before. It deserves more recognition than it has received. The only release of this movie is on hard to find 80s label “Key Video.” Blue Underground has re-released this as well. The VHS I found has a warning label regarding hypnosis, which I found out watching it can make you feel a bit woozy

The movie has multiple plots and is woven together. The plot is a movie audience is watching a movie called “The Mommy” where a crazed over-protective mother (Zelda Rubinstein) uses her mental powers to convince her son to commit heinous acts such as extracting eyeballs from victims who put down her son. She uses these acts to uphold the fantasy vision she has of her son being a well known ophthalmologist when he really isn’t. The hypnotic aspects of this movie funnel in to viewers watching this at a local theater. The real chaos occurs when a man becomes hypnotized by the affects of Zelda Rubinstein’s character and goes on a killing spree inside a local theater. The plot and atmosphere are well done. The creepy beginning scenes with the mother and her son I could tell something was truly wrong with them both by their behavior toward the birds they owned.

Angel Corbin joins Cast of 'Way Down in Chinatown'

Angel CorbinBy MoreHorror.com

Angel Corbin is having a busy – and highly productive – week.  Not only will her first feature film, DisOrientation, have its world premiere screening at Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard as part of the prestigious Dances With Films Film Festival this Saturday, she will, on Sunday, be accepting pitches from aspiring screenwriters at The Great American PitchFest on behalf of MOnsterworks66, the fledgling production company of which she is co-owner.

As if a Hollywood premiere and an appearance at PitchFest wasn’t enough, this incredibly busy actress/producer has also just landed a pivotal supporting role in Eric Michael Kochmer’s Lynchian noir feature Way Down in Chinatown.  As the cherry on the top, she has also been named Producer on the project, along with Jonathan Haloossim of 22MM Productions and Maria Olsen, Corbin’s partner-in-crime at MOnsterworks66.

There is, however, one thing that Corbin still lacks…and that’s a name for the character she will play in Way Down in Chinatown.  This is where you, constant reader, can join in and make her final dream come true…

As Way Down in Chinatown is an independent feature film, it’s not being financed through a studio or through a crew of dentists with cartloads of cash.  It is, instead, being crowd-funded through Indiegogo, that prestigious website that’s known throughout the world for bringing like-minded and generous people together to fund brilliant projects.  Its slogan “go fund yourself” says it all.  Perks are offered for contributions of all levels, and the one that’s of specific interest here is the “Angel Stories” package, which goes for $300.

Not only does the contributor get to receive wonderful perks like Associate Producer status, signed pictures, DVDs, a prop, a poster and a tshirt BUT he or she would also get to name Corbin’s character.  Her character is dark, slightly demented and definitely stalkerish, and whoever claims this perk – of which there can be only one! – will have the pleasure of always being linked to the film in this most personal of ways as well as the distinction of giving name to the character that Corbin, an extremely talented actress, will bring alive onscreen. There are also many other perk packages on offer, and all the information on how to contribute to this wonderful project can be found here: http://www.indiegogo.com/WDIC?a=4186
