'Some Guy Who Kills People' Movie Review

Some Guy Who Kills People certainly lives up to its title, but it sure is more than just that. This film is to quite simply put it, fantastic! I enjoyed this film a lot; it is a clever blend of horror, comedy and family drama.

I had no idea what to expect from this one, I dove in blind and I came out with a huge smile on my face.

The story here is about Ken (a fantastic Kevin Corrigan), he’s a loner fresh out of the loony bin trying to get his life on track. We get the idea he ended up there from a horrific event caused by a group of guys, and thus it has left him very scarred in more ways than one. As Ken apparently runs into one of those responsible for the ‘event’ he gets some revenge on his mind and the man winds up murdered. The Sheriff (Barry Bostwick) is on the case, as more men are found murdered and to complicate matters the Sheriff is dating Ken’s mother Ruth (Karen Black). But the complications don’t end there for Ken, his long lost daughter Amy (Ariel Gade) shows up and he begins to date Stephanie (Lucy Davis). All the while Ken is trying to hold a job at the ice cream place, which his seemingly only friend Irv (Leo Fitzpatrick) scored him.

That is a long plot, and there is actually quite a lot to this film, there is a lot going on but it never becomes confusing or convoluted and in fact all the plotlines get handled with care and come full circle. I was absolutely beyond impressed with the script by Ryan Levin; this is the kind of script you dream about for a genre film. Its dialogue is great, it works within the context of the film and the established characters, plus the characters are developed well and for the most part likable. The blending of the genres is handled with care and it works, again this is thanks to the fantastic script and the spot on direction by Jack Perez.

Of course the film wouldn’t have been as wonderful if it weren’t for the stunning cast that brought it all to life. Kevin Corrigan whom I have been a fan of for many years is quite simply amazing here as Ken. He carries the film well, and he certainly shows he is leading man material. His portrayal of Ken feels very much real, he’s that adorable shy type and no matter what gets implied you can’t help but like him. Barry Bostwick was great as the Sheriff, he comes off as clueless but the man sure does get the job done. Karen Black was hilarious as the over bearing mother, I found her to be natural with a very strange charm about her. I absolutely adored Ariel Gade as the long lost daughter, she was delightful and the natural chemistry between her and Corrigan made the relationship work. I really enjoyed the quiet performance by Leo Fitzpatrick as the friend, he’s certainly come a long way since Larry Clark’s Kids and this seemed perfectly suited to him. Lucy Davis was just beautiful; she was charming and funny and had a steamy chemistry with Corrigan. I loved her character, and the love story aspect was a bit more than just one-dimensional.

This is a great film; which would be viewed nicely on 3D TVs from Argos because there is so much going on, on the surface and beneath it. It takes a tongue in cheek approach to the slasher/serial killer genre, and it plays it all very well. While it might not have had the biggest of budgets, it certainly used every cent wisely and it looked great. It was nicely shot and there were some truly memorable scenes. In all, I highly recommend this one; it is well worth your time.
