We Are The Night Movie Review

Is it possible for a vampire film to feel really fresh anymore? I can happily report that yes, yes it can! We Are The Night (Wir sind die Nacht) is a recent vampire genre film out of Germany and despite the familiarity it felt very fresh and it was extremely entertaining.

The film felt like a mixture of The Lost Boys, Near Dark, and American late 90’s vampire films with that distinct European flavour. It ranges in classic genres too; it is part horror, part romance, part drama and part action. Director and co-writer Dennis Gansel successfully blended all these elements, and it was obvious while watching the film that this was a passion project. The film is Gansel’s own take on Camilla the gothic novella that pre-dates Dracula, a subject seen before on film but not quite in this way.
The story here on the surface may sound familiar but it is told in its own way and it certainly brings in that fresh feel that I mentioned earlier.

The film takes place in Berlin, and this is where we first meet Lena (Karoline Herfurth), an anti-social young lady with no life direction who likes getting into trouble. She catches the attention of cop Tom (Max Riemelt), who seems to fancy her more than he wants to arrest her. Lena ends up at a club where she meets Louise; there is an instant attraction between the pair, which leads Louise to bite Lena. The bite transforms Lena into a vampire (much like with Near Dark that word is never mentioned in the film), who hunts down Louise and her crew Charlotte (Jennifer Ulrich) and Nora (Anna Fischer) and joins them. The gang cause trouble wherever they go, and are being hunted by the police. Things do not go so well, but to reveal more would be to spoil the film for you.

The tag line for The Lost Boys goes a little something like ‘Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.’ and that really seems fitting for this film; the crew seem to live by this motto. But there is more to them than that, as Louise has this hunger to find her ‘soul mate’ and decides that Lena is it. This creates interesting relationships between the group, as well as between Lena and the cop Tom. This doesn’t have the typical romance feel either, and I quite liked that about this, it didn’t feel clichéd.

The performances are really good and very enjoyable; I was quite surprised by how well every one did. Karoline Herfurth is great; she was just perfect as Lena. She brought this very cute shyness and awkwardness, and toned it down after she changed but made sure it was still there. It was a clever performance too, and she carried the film quite well. Nina Hoss was stunning, she was amazing as Louise, the leader, the insatiable being, and the woman was pitch perfect. Hoss has been attached to this project since the very early days, and it’s not hard to see why she wanted the role and why she was wanted for it. Jennifer Ulrich was lovely and her performance was a quiet one which she made work. Anna Fischer was the playful and free spirited one of the bunch, she was fun and looked adorable. Max Riemelt was fine as Tom the cop, his role wasn’t explored as much as I would have liked but he made it work.

We Are The Night is a visual delight of a film, it looked amazing and it contained some beautiful and very memorable scenes. Those involved made sure all the night stuff had enough lighting so we could see what was going on, but not too bright to make it seem unnatural, nice stuff. There isn’t much to complain about here, it is a fun and interesting film, a breath of fresh air in an over done sub-genre.
