Horror movies do not crawl out of a vacuum. A country gets scared, angry, paranoid or just plain exhausted, and sooner or later somebody puts that feeling on a screen. Maybe it wears a mask. Maybe it carries a camera. Maybe it locks somebody in a filthy room and asks how badly they want to live.
